Chicago is constantly ranked as one of the best sports cities in the United States. Similar to other top sports cities such as Boston and Philadelphia, Chicago city sports feature passionate fans, historic teams, championship trophies, and iconic sports arenas and stadiums.
Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, is celebrating 110 years in operation. Wrigley is the second oldest Major League Baseball stadium still in use. It opened in 1914, only two years after the iconic Fenway Park in Boston. Wrigley Field is where the 108-year Cubs curse broke with a World Series win in 2016. Like many sports arenas, Wrigley also hosts concerts and other events.
Soldier Field first opened in 1924 and is the oldest NFL stadium still in use. The field is home to the Chicago Bears and, more recently, the Chicago Fire Major League Soccer team. The 61,500-capacity stadium hosts all-star concerts such as Billy Joel, Metallica, and George Strait, plus three dates of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
Newer sports arenas opened throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s. Currently, an Esports Arena is even under construction. United Center, the indoor arena home to the Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks, opened in 1994. The Chicago White Sox play at Guaranteed Rate Field opened in 1991. More recently, Wintrust Arena opened in 2017 to be the home of the Chicago Sky, the Women’s NBA team. Wintrust Arena witnessed the Sky’s 2021 WNBA Championship win.

There are only two founding teams still in the NFL, and both of them are from Chicago. The 1920 inaugural season of the American Professional Football Association (now the National Football League) saw The Decatur Staleys and The Chicago Cardinals play. While neither of these teams still go by those names, they are still professional NFL teams. The Staleys became The Chicago Bears in 1922. The Chicago Cardinals moved to St. Louis for a while before relocating again and becoming the Arizona Cardinals – the name they play under today.
Iconic Players
The Chicago Bulls have six NBA Championships to their name, and all six were won in the same decade. The 1990s Bulls are one of the most iconic teams in the NBA, if not all sports, history. Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Coach Phil Jackson’s level of talent and determination cemented the Bulls’ place in sports history. Beyond the Bulls, Michael Jordan is widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time. His impact on basketball and global culture goes far beyond Chicago sports.
While The Chicago Bears may not have as many championships as the Bulls, they do have something else: one of the most famous SNL sketches of all time. Even over three decades after the original Saturday Night Live Sketch, “da bears” remains a pop culture phrase.
Chicago City professional sports teams are champions. Collectively, Chicago teams have one Superbowl, six Stanley Cups, six NBA Championships, three World Series wins, and one WNBA Championship.
