At Wintrust Sports Complex, we believe sports are for everyone. Our mission is to promote diversity in sports, break down barriers, and create a place where every young athlete can thrive, no matter their background, ability, or identity. We know that diversity and inclusion in youth sports are personal for many of our players, parents, coaches, and fans, which is why we’ve shifted how we think about team dynamics, leadership, opportunity, and access to make sure everyone gets the chance to shine.
In this article, we’ll discuss how Wintrust Sports Complex promotes diversity and inclusion in youth sports and DEI in sports programs. We’ll also cover other steps we’re taking to create an inclusive sports environment.
The Problem with Diversity in Sports Today
Youth sports today face challenges when it comes to diversity and inclusivity. Too often, systemic barriers like high participation costs, lack of access to quality facilities, and limited representation among coaches prevent kids from underrepresented communities from getting involved. On top of that, cultural biases, gender stereotypes, and fear of discrimination can create unwelcoming environments, especially for LGBTQ+ youth, girls, and children with disabilities. These issues don’t just affect who makes it onto the team, but they also impact who even feels like they belong in the game, and certain groups continue to be underrepresented. Until we address these inequalities, youth sports will continue to fall short of its potential as an empowering space for all kids.

How We Break Down Barriers to Entry
For many families, sports come with a high price tag. Registration fees, equipment costs, transportation, and similar expenses can add up fast. When those costs become a barrier, whole communities can end up excluded from the game.
At Wintrust Sports Complex, we work to level that playing field. We offer affordable clinics and sports along with free pickup games, and we’re always finding ways to make sports more accessible to more kids. We think the first step in creating inclusive sports environments should be to make sure the door is open to everyone, and it’s one of the first ways we promote diversity in sports.
We Believe Representation Matters
Have you ever noticed how much it means to see someone who looks like you in a position of leadership? It can be a coach on the sidelines, a mentor running a workshop, or a pro athlete visiting to share their story. But it matters, especially for kids.
At Wintrust Sports Complex, we focus on recruiting a diverse group of coaches and staff because we know representation builds confidence. It tells young athletes that they belong here, too, which is one of the core principles of DEI in sports programs. We also host events and tournaments that highlight underrepresented voices in sports since we believe these stories need to be told, and we want to help make that happen.
We Have Inclusive Programming
Our sports programs are built with diversity and inclusion in youth sports in mind. That means everything from how we form teams to the language we use in our coaching sessions. We ask questions like, is this training adaptable for kids of all ability levels? Are our team-building activities respectful and open to all? Are we making space for LGBTQ+ youth to feel safe and seen? Yes, we’re running sports leagues, but we’re also creating a community. We want our members to thrive on mutual respect and equality.
We Support DEI Training for Staff and Coaches
At Wintrust Sports Complex, we support DEI training for staff and coaches. We understand unconscious bias, inclusive language, anti-bullying, and how to create team cultures where everyone feels welcome. This should always be an ongoing conversation because when coaches lead with awareness, it filters down to the players, and teams start to feel more connected. It’s one of the biggest ways we promote diversity in sports.

We Create Spaces to Speak Up
We know that sports environments, like any social space, aren’t always perfect. Discrimination, harassment, or exclusion can still creep in. That’s why we support players or families who want to speak up safely if something doesn’t feel right. We also encourage our players to talk about what diversity means to them. We want them to feel heard, and we’re not afraid to have those real conversations.
We Partner with the Right People
We’re not doing this alone. We team up with organizations that are already doing amazing work in the DEI space. These partnerships allow us to extend our reach, learn from others, and bring new voices into our programs. We’re constantly evolving and growing, thanks to the organizations we collaborate with.
